Great Flood of 1993

No where near the crest - when it did,
the water was just below the front door knob.

After the waters finally receded.

It was 20 years ago today that the river crested here during the Great Flood of 1993.

I did not live where I do now thankfully, but I do have a couple of photos of my house during the flood.
We bought it several years after the flood, at the time confident we would never see flooding here because the previous owners told us it never did except in '93. We were sure surprised to see the field partially fill with water that first year here ! Nearly every year since we've had lake front property at some point , but nothing like the flooding we saw in 2008 or the two this past spring, all of which were top ten record setting floods. I'm not so confident now we won't see a flood that reaches our home at some point while we live here........

When it crested, the water breached the sandbag wall, inundating the main living area. The basement had already been full of water. I can not imagine the smell and never ending stress as well as living in tents for the months during the flood (there was no water or electricity). Then there was the horrible mess and loss afterwards.  Although this years flood was the 4th highest on record, it was no where near what they saw in 1993.

During 1993 we lived in the area, but not by the river. We would remain high and dry and because our water service came from well water, we never lost that service where as many towns in the area did since their water came from the river. The flood waters swallowed up the water treatment plant.

Not only was the crest historic, but the duration of the flood itself. Many areas, ours included, saw flood waters for nearly 200 days !

Do a search for "Great Flood of 1993" and you will find hundreds of posts, photos and videos relating to it.
Absolutely amazing, especially when you see the aerial shots of what the river looked like a normal stage then during the flood.

  1. Yikes! Praying that you never have to go through that!! Really makes us think about the things we take for granted every day!
