House Of Cards - Color / Texture

Here we are, the first of another month (this year is flying by !) 

which means it is time for a new challenge at House of Cards : 

 colors and/or textures from the inspiration photo below. 

My card uses similar colors - and texture !

YES, that is a real crackled paint background that I painted then scored, 

making debossed lines on to resemble old weathered wood boards. 

Trying to capture the crackled paint with "fly specks".

How To:

Coat heavy card stock really well with crackle medium

(I bought mine years ago in the craft paint section).

Allow to dry thoroughly before applying paint.

Depending on how thick or thin you put the paint on,

the cracks will be larger or finer. 

Do not go back over the paint once it is on,

that will alter the cracking process.

I used a cream paint over a dark green card stock.

"Fly specks" were created with a speckled background

stamp from the old Itty Bitty Backgrounds stamp set, Stampin' Up!

I  normally use an old toothbrush to splatter on paint for speckling. 

NOTE: Color may "bleed" through from the card stock,

altering the color of your cracked paint layer. 

I stamped leaves from the old Lovely Leaves stamp set

by Stampin' Up! with multiple colors onto Vanilla card stock:

So Saffron and Pear Pizzazz

More Mustard and Pumpkin Pie

I also added a few specks of Espresso to them.

I then hand cut them out and bent them slightly

(I should have stamped the backs, too !).

They are adhered with hot glue over loops of thin twine.

I added a strip of Pear Pizzazz card stock that I

distressed the edges of and added piercing to.

A small little Happy Birthday stamp from Stampin' Up!

was stamped with Handsome Hunter ink. 

The burlap "ribbon" is actually a strip cut from some

old fabric in my stash and adhered with double stick tape.

Dad's Truck - Scrap Page

This is a scrapbook page I made in memory of my Dad who recently passed away 

and his show truck he spent several years making one of a kind.

The page was created to display in his truck along with a note about the truck.

I also displayed the hat he wore to many car shows.

I had a few hours to make this page last Thursday since it was decided that day

we would be driving his truck to a HUGE weekend long car show 

rather than taking one of our own classic vehicles.

We have gone to this event that celebrates America's Mother Road,

Route 66, every fall for the past several years.

My Dad was never able to attend due to his failing health. 

We left early Friday morning and arrived home late yesterday evening.

It was a bittersweet weekend for me, as you can imagine.............

DAD'S was die cut from lightweight chipboard with a die set

that I bought from Stampin' Up! years ago. 

The apostrophe was hand cut since the die set has none.

The edges of the die cuts were lightly inked.

TRUCK was stamped with the old Alphadots stamp set by Stampin' Up! 

with black ink on kraft card stock then paper punched out. 

Each letter is attached with a pop dot / dimensional. 

What do you think of my wheel and tire embellishment?

 Did you know that is what it was supposed to be ? 

I die cut a scalloped circle from black card stock then trimmed the scallops off .

I cut out the center of the circle, this makes the tire.

I've done this technique on several projects over the years.

I add die cut circles from silver card stock and hand cut pieces that are 

accented with ink pens to recreate the look of a wheel.

They are all glued into place then attached to the page

with pop dots / dimensionals. 

Three assorted scraps of ribbon and ric rac were hot glued into place.

A "gear" was die cut from silver card stock then lightly inked.

It is one of a set of four from Joy crafts that I bought at Joann.com

a couple of years ago. 

I hand cut the banner that was stamped with an image from 

a set sold by Stampin' Up ! ( I do not remember the name of it). 

Two of the photos are mounted with black corner photo mounts,

the other is matted onto textured black card stock and glued in place.

The decorative papers were all leftovers from a set I bought

years ago at Big Lots. I have no idea of the name or manufacturer.

I can't bring myself to say that it is "my" truck;

I probably never will. 

I have yet to drive it myself, much less bring it to my house.

He wanted me to have it, as does my Mom............... 

Sniffle. It's only been a month.

Mom's 70th Birthday Card

This is the card I ended up making (after tossing around several ideas) for my Mom's 70th Birthday. It was a bittersweet birthday since Dad just passed away not quite two weeks before. There was no celebrating this year, in fact she didn't want to do anything, we didn't even have a cake. Having the water heater break, leaving a watery mess on the floor first thing that morning didn't help any........ She and I were able to spend some time together working out plans for Dad's Celebration of Life, though.

Moving on, the card is quite a mish mash of stuff, isn't it? I used fishing line to suspend the 70 from, had hoped they would float above the stamped panel more, but it didn't quite work as planned. If I had doubled up my dimensions to make the gap thicker, it would have worked better. I should have just removed the fishing line and glued the 70 to the background piece, the line, although clear, is still visible and a distraction.

Most supplies used were from Stampin' Up!, nearly all of which are no longer available.

Almost Amethyst card stock was run through an embossing folder (Fancy Fan?).

Eggplant Envy card stock was die cut with a large clear scalloped square die for the card base and a circle plus a scalloped circle Nestabilities die for the frame.

The 70 was die cut with my Cricut Create and Library Font cartridge. It was painted with metallic silver.

The Butterfly is a stamp image with matching paper punch from, Papillion Potpourri. I water colored it with ink from my ink pads then spritzed it with a home made shimmer spray.

The larger rolled flowers are simply paper punch circles of Vintage Violet card stock that I cut into spirals with scissors, rolled then hot glued into place on a small circle shaped scrap of paper. The top edges were decorated with clear drying glue and glitter.

The small white flowers are from the Flower Trio punch that I trimmed in between two of the petals and glued into place to create a bit of dimension. I water colored the centers, adding a rhinestones.

The leaves were cut from Old Olive card stock with a Sizzix Die, Little Leaves (? I think was the name) and I added a darker green water colored edge.

There are silver thread loops behind the flowers and clear rhinestones on each scallop of the card front base frame.

The small white tag is a paper punch , MOM is made with clear stamps from Technique Tuesday.
The Happy Birthday is a stamp from the Elegant Greetings set by Stampin' Up!

What a mess !!!!

First Signs Of Fall

The firebush is starting to change

First colorful leaf that blew in from somewhere

as there are no trees with leaves that have changed

on our property yet,

Butterflies love this flower

Hints of color on the firebush with that lone

yellow leaf on the ground near it.

Notice all of the green leaves in the trees behind still.

Difficult to see, but the hostas are covered with huge spiderwebs - eek ! 

Time to turn around my photo memory boxes I made for my pets.

Each side is seasonally decorated.

It doesn't feel like fall here.

Temperatures are well above normal for this time of year

nearing 90 degrees for highs ! 

Hanging Heart - Remembrance Quote

This is hanging that I made for display at the

Celebration of Life for my Dad.

The heart shaped base is foam that the heads of small red 

carnation like flowers were pushed into.

I did not make the base portion, 

it is actually from a framed piece I bought 

on clearance after Valentine's Day years ago.

I ripped out the plain flower covered heart from the

rustic frame so I could use the frame. 

I knew one day I would find a use for that heart ! 

The ribbon for hanging is also repurposed from

something else and hot glued onto the back.

I made my own word art, printing it out onto 

white card stock then cutting it into a banner/flag shape.

The red rose was made with the spiral flower die

from Stampin' Up! and red card stock inked with burgundy ink.

The leaves were cut from Always Artichoke cardstock

with a flower paper punch, also from Stampin' Up!

The edges were inked.

The white flowers were made with another flower punch

from Stampin' Up! and lightly inked with Barely Banana.

 I placed yellow rhinestones in the middles.

All pieces were hot glued to the base after I curled them to my liking.

There is thin gold cord looped underneath the florals for extra detail.

This is a lovely handmade card that a long time "pen pal"

made and sent to me in Sympathy of my Dad's passing. 

Lovely colors, images and a fun layout.

Never A Dull Moment Digi Kit

I used the template, also designed by Jodi at JMC Designs,

for the above layout. It was created and shared for a template

challenge at Scraps-N-Pieces. 

I used the template in Photoshop Elements 10.

 template from the Scraps-N-Pieces.com 

challenge forum.

The above crafting chaos was from a card I made for my mom recently

(I'll be sharing it on the blog soon).

I've had a couple chaotic crafty days the past three weeks after

my father's passing. I made a few items for his

Celebration of Life in addition to some 

quicky thank you cards and moms birthday card.

My dining room table also had a huge mess on it,

being taken over for my photo slideshow project.

Sorting, canning, editing, restoring old photos I had been lent

by relatives in order to make a slideshow for the 

Celebration of Life.  WHEW !!!!!!!!

It has been a whirlwind these past few weeks.

Things should be settling down soon.

I'll still have my hands fuller than normal with helping

out my mom, but now that we have made it through 

the Celebration of Life planning/ event itself,

I should have more spare "me" time  :) 

I have a few paper crafty items to share in the next

couple of weeks, then it will time before I know it

to share another House Of Cards project as well as

more digital scrapbook pages

for JMC Designs !!!
